Hello! We’re so glad you’re here to learn more about our favorite place, The Barn at Bunker Hill. We are a family-owned and run business with a single goal in mind: to give other families the perfect place to make memories of a lifetime. To be honest, we never set out to own or run a wedding venue. Nope, we just wanted a gorgeous place to have our daughter Hannah’s wedding (she’s the one on the left) in 2015. She was marrying her high school sweetheart, and was on the hunt for the perfect space to host most of their hometown as they said “I do.” Well, it turned out that that perfect place was in her own back yard, literally. Angie (on the right) is the creative visionary of the family, and had a clear vision for what the 100-year-old barn on her property could look like with just a little (read: a lot of) TLC. Once the vision was there, our family pitched in to spend the next 6 months renovating the space into what it is today. It wasn’t an easy process, but the end result was so worth it! Our first wedding was held on June 27th, 2015, and the rest is history!
Meet Our Barn Family
Hannah
If you’ve ever contacted the Barn, you probably talked to Hannah first! She’s the communicator and event planner of the family, and manages the details for each Barn event. For the first two years of the Barn’s life, Hannah worked remotely from Cheyenne, Wyoming, where she lived until early 2018. Now, she lives back in Iowa and does more of the hands-on barn work like giving tours, working directly with couples to coordinate their Barn event, and helping make the space look amazing for each event. Hannah has a degree in public relations from Iowa State University, and prior to working for the Barn full time, she worked in nonprofit communications.
Angie
Angie is the Barn’s owner and creative brain behind making the it look AMAZING. Seriously, this whole thing was her idea (and we all thought she was a little crazy) but we’re so glad she didn’t take no for an answer! Now, Angie spends her time dreaming about what’s next for our Barn, rearranging things (it’s her favorite thing to do!), and making things look beautiful! When she’s not working at the Barn, Angie helps make sure the farm is running smoothly alongside her husband Grant (and Ralphie the farm dog). This isn’t Angie’s first entrepreneurial journey either… she owned and operated Angie’s Dance Academy for more than 10 years before trading dance choreography for event choreography.
The Barn
We believe this barn was originally built in 1873, and was originally built for milking cows. Since then, it has housed pigs and calves, as well as been used for hay storage, and now weddings! During the renovation, we aimed to preserve as much as we could from the original structure, while also transforming it into a useable space. The barn had a new roof put on about 30 years ago, which is likely the only reason it is in such great structural shape today! It still features it’s original limestone foundation, which is one of it’s most beautiful features. The windmill that now sits on our property was moved from a lot less than two miles from our property, and now serves as the most beautiful backdrop for outdoor ceremonies.
The Barn’s name also has an amazing backstory, coming from a one room school house that used to sit very close to our property. The Bunker Hill School was founded in 1891, and served children in our local school district for many years before it was eventually moved into town (Durant). We even have family that attended the one room school, and we had the pleasure of hosting a Bunker Hill School reunion in 2018!
